The Paper Clip

Several years ago I was asked to make a paper clip/ bill holder for a client...I balked. I considered the item too common. The client persisted and I gave into the idea with the proviso I take some time to find a paper clip that is the quintessential paper clip.  If I were going to do lots of these clips, it had to be one I really liked to make.

By accident, I came across a clip from the 1940's stuck in the back of an old file box picked up at a garage sale. l refined the shape a bit, made it larger but kept the proportions, including the wire gauge. I was satisfied. This was the one, The Paper Clip!

I've been making the clip for several years. I've sold them through my wholesale accounts and given them as gifts. They have proven to be very popular. One buyer, a movie producer, has purchased over thirty as gifts for business associates and friends.

Seeing the need for a gift box, I looked all over, but all I found were just the same mediocre cardboard or overstated wooden luxury boxes, none the correct size. So...I designed and hand make a box that matches the gift box I make for the buckles. The process takes a bit of extra time but the clip is worth it. I think both came out pretty nice!

Unlike the buckles, I make the clips in advance and put them up on the shopping section of my website. As many of you know, it takes me awhile to make a buckle, but The Paper Clip is ready to go...
